Clients often describe a feeling of being ‘stuck’. Sometimes at first when they describe it, that can sound really rigid and as if they have no control over either the situation or the feeling. I often hear phrases such as ‘it’s just the way it is’ and ‘I’ve got to just get on with it’.
These phrases are often a coping mechanism, a way of making the unmanageable manageable. Having space during a counselling session to describe that feeling of ‘stuckness’ can be really beneficial but can also be really hard. It’s not easy to admit to the feeling of helplessness and powerlessness that often comes with the sense of being stuck. Acknowledging those difficult feelings though is the first step to being
able to work through them.
Counselling gives you the safe space to be able to acknowledge, sit with, and explore those feelings at a pace that feels right for you, without judgement. Exploring your feelings in this way can really help, particularly if you feel, or are worried about feeling, overwhelmed.
There’s something really powerful about being able to say exactly how you feel, without having to edit yourself or worry about hurting anyone’s feelings.
Counselling gives you the space to focus on you, which may feel a little uncomfortable, but that’s when it reaps the most reward.
If that feeling of ‘stuckness’ resonates with you, please get in touch to either book your first session or arrange a FREE initial telephone consultation.
